  3. Biography of Arati Prabhakar:

    Arati Prabhakar joined U.S. Venture Partners in 2001 and is presently a partner with the firm. USVP is an active early-stage investor in a broad array of IT and healthcare startup companies. Arati's focus is fabless semiconductor and semiconductor manufacturing opportunities. She serves on the boards of Leadis Technology (NASDAQ: LDIS), Kleer, Piviotal Systems, Arradiance, SiBeam, and Kilopass. Arati started her career at the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA). In 1993, President Clinton appointed Arati as the director of the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST). Arati later worked at Raychem Corporation as senior vice president and chief technology officer, and as vice president and then president of Interval Research Corporation. She received her B.S.E.E. from Texas Tech University. She received an M.S.E.E. and a Ph.D. in Applied Physics from Caltech.

    Biography of Tom Fountain:

    Tom Fountain's focus at Mayfield Fund is infrastructure software, networking, and security. Given this emphasis, Tom co-led Mayfield's investments in Akimbi and Webroot. He also works with portfolio companies including Cemaphore, Determina, Elemental Security, Mendocino, Narus, and Scalix. Prior to joining Mayfield in 2003, Tom was Co-founder and Director of Engineering, Business Development, and Corporate Development at Ingrian, a leading provider of network and database security solutions. Tom joined Ingrian from Stanford University where he served on the faculty of both the Electrical Engineering and Computer Science departments. He authored a required course textbook and taught core graduate and undergraduate courses ranging from programming to systems architecture. Before joining the Stanford faculty, Tom was Founder, President & CEO of a software development and retail sales firm with operations in four states. He is the co-inventor of 10 U.S. and 4 international patent-pending technologies in networking, security, and operating systems. Tom was a PhD student in Electrical Engineering at Stanford University, where he earned an MBA with distinction as an Arjay Miller Scholar from the Graduate School of Business, an MS in Electrical Engineering, an MS in Computer Science, and a BS in Computer Systems Engineering.

      Bio of Dr. Aart J. de Geus, Chairman of the Board and Chief Executive Officer of Synopsys:

      Since co-founding Synopsys in 1986, Dr. Aart de Geus has expanded Synopsys from a start-up synthesis enterprise to a world leader in electronic design automation (EDA). As a technology visionary, he is frequently asked to speak on topics related to the electronics industry. As one of the leading experts on logic simulation and logic synthesis, Dr. de Geus was made a Fellow of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) in January 1999. He was also honored for pioneering the commercial logic synthesis market by being named the third recipient ever to receive the IEEE Circuits and Systems Society Industrial Pioneer Award. In 2002, shortly after transacting the largest merger in EDA history, Dr. de Geus was named CEO of the Year by Electronic Business magazine; and in 2004, Entrepreneur of the Year in IT for Northern California by Ernst & Young. Dr. de Geus is active in the business community as a member of the board of the Silicon Valley Leadership Group (SVLG), the Electronic Design Automation Consortium (EDAC), and the Fabless Semiconductor Association (FSA). He is also heavily involved in education for the next generation, having created in 1999 the Synopsys Outreach Foundation, which promotes project-based science and math learning throughout Silicon Valley.

    Bios of the speakers:
    Sean Tario, Director of Marketing and Business Development, CampusBooks.com


    Sean served on the Executive Management Team of AllDorm Inc. and was the primary and at times the only employee responsible for managing and growing the Retail Division of AllDorm. During this time he worked within a wide range of roles from raising seed stage capital to managing all online and offline merchandising and marketing efforts. Sean sits on the Board of Directors within Santa Clara University's Center for Innovation and Entrepreneurship and has a Bachelors of Science in Economics and Political Science from SCU.
    He is currently the Director of Marketing and Business Development for CampusBooks.com Inc., an online comparative textbook shopping portal for college students.

    Kevon Saber, VP of Marketing, GenPlay Games

    Kevon oversees the company's communications, strategy, and human resources. GenPlay Games creates and publishes mobile video games that people download on their cell phone from Verizon, Sprint, Cingular, and T-Mobile.
    Before co-founding GenPlay, Kevon was the president of AllDorm, a marketing services company that executes national promotional campaigns for consumer product and service companies.
    Kevon has been featured on ABC, CBS & FOX, and in Entrepreneur Magazine, The LA Times, The Chicago Tribune & The San Jose Mercury News, among other media outlets. Saber graduated with honors in Finance and Economics from Santa Clara University in 2002. When he's not speaking or working, Kevon can be found playing tennis and ballroom dancing.

    Kevin Holmes, Director, SCU Center of Innovation and Entrepreneurship

    Kevin Holmes is the Director of Santa Clara s Center for Innovation and Entrepreneurship (CIE). The CIE exists to serve Santa Clarans interested in the art of innovation and entrepreneurship. Prior to his role as Direcotr, Kevin was the Chief Operations Officer at AllDorm Inc, a leading collegiate media marketing company that provides reach to over 1,200 universities nationwide. Kevin is a History 2001 SCU alumn and was a member of the SCU Mens Basketball team.

    Speakers:
    • John Ocampo, a co-founder of Sirenza, has served as Sirenza's Chairman of the Board since December 1998. From May 1999 to September 2002, Mr. Ocampo served as Sirenza's Chief Technology Officer, and from 1984 to May 1999 as Sirenza's President and Chief Executive Officer. From 1982 to 1984, Mr. Ocampo served as General Manager at Magnum Microwave, an RF component manufacturer. From 1980 to 1982, he served as an Engineering Manager at Avantek, a telecommunications engineering company, now Hewlett-Packard/Avantek. Mr. Ocampo holds a B.S.E.E. degree from Santa Clara University.
    • Martin Nguyen's practice focuses primarily on intellectual property procurement, strategy, and opinion work related to mechanical, biomedical, and electrical technologies, with a particular emphasis on medical devices. He has extensive experience in counseling small companies regarding intellectual property issues, including technology transactions, portfolio management, and interactions with potential investors. Martin is currently Associate Director of Intellectual Property for the Girvan Group, a venture development entity chartered to promote global public-private technology partnerships. Martin is admitted to practice in California and before the United States Patent & Trademark Office. Martin received a Bachelor of Science in Physiology from UCLA and a Juris Doctor from Santa Clara University, School of Law.
    • Carlini (Father and Daughter) - The Father-Daughter team, of Ronald J. Carlini and Therese Carlini Moss, created their consulting firm Venture Capital Strategies to help companies prepare for raising operating capital and for forming strategic alliances. They assist companies in developing their business model, focusing in the areas of: Market Potential, Financials, Management, Product, and Strategic Alliances and then introduce those companies to the investors whose investment criteria they best fit. They have worked with many first time entrepreneurs, seasoned investors, and previously successful CEO's, who have all needed some level of assistance and guidance in the fund raising process. The team has established strong ties in the venture capital community and has worked as advisors to leading venture capital firms. They are co-authors of their new book "Smooth Sailing to Venture Capital Funding."
      • Ronald J. Carlini has held several executive and senior management positions in the semiconductor and telecommunications industries. Mr. Carlini played a major role in the negotiations and in the due diligence process that resulted in Amati Communications being acquired by Texas Instruments Inc. for $398 million. During his career, Mr. Carlini has developed an extensive network of contacts with venture capitalists, industry analysts, investment bankers, and law firms that specialize in new business ventures. He has helped raise investment funds for over 20 companies.
      • Therese Carlini Moss has worked in the high tech industry for 20 years. She has held executive management positions at both start-up companies and major high tech corporations. Her industry experience includes server hardware and software companies, networking companies, and both consumer and business-to-business e-commerce. Therese earned an MBA from Santa Clara University.

    Speakers:
    • Justin Pettit has worked in the computer security industry since 1996. His work has primarily consisted of network penetration studies and development of intrusion detection systems. He has worked at three successful start-ups, including one that he co-founded. Two of them were acquired by Cisco and one by Network Associates. He was an OMIS major at Santa Clara in the class of 1995. Currently, he works at McAfee as a senior embedded software engineer.
    • Oli Francis studied Electrical Engineering at Santa Clara University. He saw robotic systems as an emerging market worth pursuing. As a Robotic Systems Lab staff member, Oli supervised project teams, designed and built control technology for underwater Remotely Operated Vehicles (ROVs), managed ROV deployments, and taught classes in Marine Operations. In 2002, Oli co-founded Idean Robotics and is currently the CEO. Idean creates control and telemetry systems for extreme environment robotics. Idean supplies hardware and software solutions to the underwater robotics market, aerospace, the industrial robotics industry and research-based organizations. In his free time, Oli enjoys SCUBA diving, sailing, community outreach and quality time with his family. Oli holds a Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering from Santa Clara University. Currently, he is pursuing a Masters degree in Engineering Management from Santa Clara University.
